Timber Retaining Walls
Timber does most of the work in the Hutt Valley. A pole and rail wall goes up in a few days, costs less per metre than anything else, and holds a 1.2m step in level.

Top Retaining Walls Lower Hutt builds retaining walls across Naenae, on ground that is about as straightforward as the Hutt Valley gets. Naenae sits on the flat, on river gravel carried down from the Tararua Range, which digs predictably and founds a post well.
Naenae was built out from the 1940s as government state housing, on generous flat sections laid out around the centre. Almost nothing here needed a retaining wall when it was built.
What creates the walls is what people have done since. Sections have been split, houses added at the back, decks and patios cut in, and driveways lowered. Every one of those changes leaves a step in level that has to be held somewhere.

These walls are usually 400mm to 1.2m and run along a boundary. They look simple and they mostly are, as long as the treatment level is right and the drainage goes in.
The thing to check is what sits above. When fill for a new build slopes up behind your wall, that fill is a surcharge, and a surcharge takes the job outside the consent exemption even when the wall is well under 1.5 metres. It is the most common surprise we deal with in infill suburbs.
Wide flat sections with room down the side mean a machine can usually reach the wall line, and that is the single biggest thing keeping the price at the better end of the range.
Compared with a hill job in Normandale or Stokes Valley, the same 12 metres of wall here will often come in noticeably cheaper for no reason other than that we can drive to it.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
Generally the party whose soil is being retained, because the wall holds their ground. Get any cost sharing agreement in writing before work starts. We can provide a written scope you can both look at.
Most 8m to 12m garden walls take one to two days once we start, plus curing time for the post concrete before we backfill against it.

Concrete goes in wherever something heavy sits above the wall, and in a city built beside an active fault it is also what engineers reach for first. We build.

Stone suits the Hutt hills, where a hard manufactured face can look wrong against bush and rock. The whole region is founded on greywacke, so local quarries put out.
