Timber Retaining Walls
Timber does most of the work in the Hutt Valley. A pole and rail wall goes up in a few days, costs less per metre than anything else, and holds a 1.2m step in level.

Top Retaining Walls Lower Hutt builds retaining walls throughout Waterloo, one of the easier parts of the valley to work in. The ground is flat, the sections are established, and underneath sits the Waiwhetu gravel, which geotechnical work describes as dense to very dense.
The Hutt Valley floor is filled with gravels carried down the river from the Tararua Range, and the Waiwhetu Artesian Gravels beneath this part of the valley are dense material with shear wave velocities well above the softer layers nearer Petone.
For a retaining wall that means firm founding, predictable digging and free draining ground behind the wall. It is a good deal easier than working on the soft sediments at the harbour end or the weathered clay up on the hills.

Waterloo has mature gardens and a lot of walls sit a few metres from the house where you look at them every day. Keystone block and timber sleepers both give a clean face that suits that, and Keystone steps around a curve in a way straight timber cannot.
On a long boundary run, pole and rail still costs less per metre and we will tell you so rather than upselling you into block you do not need.
Established Waterloo sections have serious trees on them, and roots run further than the canopy suggests. Digging a post hole through a major root either damages the tree or stops the job.
We look at what is growing near the wall line before we quote. Sometimes we recommend a gravity wall like gabion or crib instead, because those need a shallow foundation rather than a row of deep individual post holes.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
Often, by choosing a wall type with a shallow foundation instead of deep post holes, or by shifting the wall line slightly. We assess root zones on site.
It is some of the best in the valley. Dense gravel below, flat sections and usually decent machine access.

Concrete goes in wherever something heavy sits above the wall, and in a city built beside an active fault it is also what engineers reach for first. We build.

Past 1.5m, or once a driveway or building sits above it, the job changes completely. You need a chartered engineer, a building consent from Hutt City Council and.

Stone suits the Hutt hills, where a hard manufactured face can look wrong against bush and rock. The whole region is founded on greywacke, so local quarries put out.
