The parts that decide how long a timber wall lasts are the parts you cannot see once it is finished. Anyone can nail a rail to a post. The wall survives because the poles carry an H5 treatment, because the footing goes deep enough into ground that actually holds, and because there is clean metal and a drain coil taking water away behind the face.
Wellington weather makes that last point sharper here than it is in most of the country. The valley catches heavy rain off the Tararua Range and the southerlies drive water into everything standing up. A drained H5 wall here commonly runs 25 to 40 years. An undrained one can be soft at ground line inside a decade.
