Timber Retaining Walls
Timber does most of the work in the Hutt Valley. A pole and rail wall goes up in a few days, costs less per metre than anything else, and holds a 1.2m step in level.

Top Retaining Walls Lower Hutt builds retaining walls in Belmont, on the western hills where the suburb runs up against Belmont Regional Park. Sections here tend to be larger than the valley average, with more room to work and more bush along the boundaries.
Belmont properties often have more land than a typical Hutt section, which means longer wall runs and usually better access. Both work in your favour on price, because setup costs spread over more metres and a machine can often reach the wall line.
It also means gravity walls become practical. Crib walls and gabions need a footprint that a tight urban section cannot spare, and out here there is usually room.

A lot of Belmont sections sit against regenerating bush or look straight into Belmont Regional Park. That is exactly the setting where a plantable wall face earns its keep.
Fill the front cells of a crib wall with topsoil and plant them and within two or three seasons the concrete or timber largely disappears. Gabions do the same thing on their own, since moss and small plants colonise the rock face without any help.
Hutt City Council requires consent for retaining walls over 1.5 metres in non rural zones and over 3 metres in a rural zone. Some of the larger Belmont properties sit in rural zoning, which genuinely changes what is possible without a full consent process.
Worth checking rather than assuming, and we check it as part of the quote. The rural threshold only applies where the design has been done or reviewed by a chartered professional engineer.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
Some of the larger ones are. It matters, because the consent threshold moves from 1.5 metres to 3 metres in a rural zone where an engineer has done the design. We check it for you.
Crib with planted front cells, or gabion. Both green over quickly and both drain completely, which suits a slope that catches a lot of rain.

Concrete goes in wherever something heavy sits above the wall, and in a city built beside an active fault it is also what engineers reach for first. We build.

Past 1.5m, or once a driveway or building sits above it, the job changes completely. You need a chartered engineer, a building consent from Hutt City Council and.

Stone suits the Hutt hills, where a hard manufactured face can look wrong against bush and rock. The whole region is founded on greywacke, so local quarries put out.
