Top Retaining Walls Lower Hutt builds retaining walls through Eastbourne and the eastern bays, where the hills drop almost straight into the harbour and the flat land is a narrow strip along the shore. Nearly every job out here is a slope job with an access problem attached to it.
Eastbourne, Days Bay, Mahina Bay, York Bay and Lowry Bay all sit on the same narrow shelf with greywacke hills rising sharply behind. Houses are cut into the slope, driveways climb hard, and back sections often rise faster than the house is wide.
Sloping ground above a wall counts as a surcharge, so most walls out here need a chartered engineer and a consent from Hutt City Council regardless of the height they measure. We work on that assumption until the site proves otherwise.

Weathered greywacke on a steep coastal slope moves when it gets saturated, and heavy rain on these hills is not rare. Water control is part of slope stability out here, not just wall protection.
So we spend more time than usual working out where surface and subsurface water goes. A coil that simply gets water out of the trench and dumps it further down the slope has moved the problem rather than solved it.
Bare galvanising corrodes faster this close to the water. On gabion work in the bays we specify PVC coated mesh, and we use hot dip galvanised or stainless fixings throughout rather than the cheaper alternatives.
Greywacke and concrete are untroubled by salt air, which is one reason block, gabion and stone walls are so common along this side of the harbour.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
