Top Retaining Walls Lower Hutt builds retaining walls throughout Maungaraki, on the western hills looking back across the valley. This is hill country work. Sections climb hard off the road, the ground is weathered greywacke, and the Wellington Fault runs along the base of these hills.
The basement rock under the western hills is hard greywacke. What you dig into on a Maungaraki section is its weathered mantle, a yellow clay rich material that Wellington gardeners know far too well.
It holds a cut face well when it is dry and behaves quite differently once it takes on water, which it does readily in a Wellington winter. So the drainage system behind the wall is carrying more of the job here than it would down on the free draining valley gravel.

People assume the exemption is about height. On a Maungaraki section it usually is not. Ground sloping up behind a wall imposes load on it, and that surcharge takes the job outside the Schedule 1 exemption whatever the wall measures.
Combined with the heights these sections actually need, most jobs here end up consented through Hutt City Council. We tell you at the first visit and organise the engineer if it is needed.
Two 1.2m walls with a planted terrace between them usually cost less overall than one engineered 2.4m wall, and they give you flat ground instead of bank. On a wide Maungaraki section there is often room to do it.
The terraces also slow surface water on the way down the slope, which matters here more than it does on the flat. It only works where the separation is genuine, and we measure that rather than assume it.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
