Timber retaining walls almost never rot for interesting reasons. They rot because the posts were H4 rather than H5, or because there was no drainage and the timber sat permanently wet, or both. Both are cheap to get right when the wall is built and expensive once it has failed.

Where timber retaining walls rot, and why they rot there

The ground line

The zone at and just below finished ground is where a post is alternately wet and dry with plenty of oxygen, which is the ideal condition for decay fungi. It is also where the bending load on a retaining post is highest, so it is the worst possible place to lose section.

Behind the sleepers

The retained face of a sleeper sits against wet soil permanently. Without drainage metal and geotextile behind, the timber never dries.

H4 where H5 was needed

H4 is rated for above ground exterior use. H5 is the ground contact rating. Substituting one for the other is the single most common cause of premature failure in the Hutt Valley timber walls.

Rotten timber retaining wall repair or full replacement

Test with a screwdriver or a probe at ground line on several posts along the run. If most posts are sound and a few have gone, sectional replacement works and it is far cheaper.

If the probe goes in easily on post after post, the wall is at the end of its life and replacing individual posts just moves the failure along the run.

Doing the repair so the new timber does not go the same way

New posts go in H5 with a proper concrete surround and embedment matched to the retained height. Sleepers go back H4. And while the ground is open we install the drainage that was missing, because otherwise the new timber sits in exactly the conditions that killed the old.

Rotten Timber Repair in Lower Hutt: common questions

How do I tell if my posts are rotten?

Probe at ground line with a screwdriver on several posts. Sound timber resists. Rotten timber lets it in easily.

Can I just replace the sleepers?

Only if the posts are sound. The posts do the structural work, so new sleepers on rotten posts achieve nothing.

Why did the timber rot so fast?

Nearly always H4 posts where H5 was needed, or no drainage so the timber never dried out.

Will the new timber last longer?

Yes, if it goes in H5 with proper drainage. That combination is the difference between five years and thirty.

How do I check whether my posts are rotten?

Probe at ground line with a screwdriver on several posts along the run, not just one. Sound timber resists. Rotten timber lets the blade in easily and comes away damp and fibrous. Ground line is the right place to test because it is where decay concentrates and where the bending load is highest.

Can rotten posts be replaced without taking the wall down?

Often yes, where the failure is localised. New posts go in beside or between the old positions and the existing sleepers drop back into place. It works best on a straight run with standard sleeper sizes, and it is a fraction of a full rebuild.

Why did my wall rot after only ten years?

Almost always H4 posts where H5 was needed, no drainage so the timber never dried out, or both. Both were normal practice on plenty of walls built in the 1980s and 1990s, and both are cheap to get right at build time and expensive to correct afterwards.
